DJ Swordz Interview

We grabbed the brand new DMC World Portablist champion, DJ Swordz, for an interview on everything Portablist!

DJ Swordz Custom PT01 Scratch

When did you start DJing & what got you in to it?

I started in 1998 after having seen the 1998 DMC US championships. You know the one where Craze had won for the first time? After this video I knew I had to get into this.
Also, after having checked out Q-Bert’s performances I was immediately sold to scratching.
I used to play the guitar before that for years already, so I was very much interested in the technical aspect & the fast finger movements.

What attracted you to Portable DJing?

The fact that now you can go basically anywhere and start scratching with friends have a BBQ, have some drinks. The social part of this is also very important.
The way you can just go to any public place like an outdoor park, meet up with friends and terrorize with dope ass beats and cuts.

What is the portablist scene like in Belgium? And where are the best spots to session?

Brussels obviously has a big scene and has very nice spots. Although the other cities are dope too. Ghent, Antwerp, Liege, etc…
It’s nice to travel around and just meet up outside when the weather’s nice.

Who are some portablists DJ’s that you'd like to shout out or feel are making waves in the Portablist scene?

The guys from Portables Gear, Germany. Those are the guys in Europe that rebuild your gear.
Ritchie Rufftone and his yearly portables battle. Unfortunately, I couldn’t enter this year because after the DMC I was very busy with my day job.
Jesse Dean makes great stuff for portablists.
Huge shoutout to Bihari from Hungary for the great modded portables.
The Polish scene, the German scene, the French, all dope people I have met along the long way I’ve been into this.
Basically, every scene in every country! It is such a nice thing to see that this is so popular.
And of course, the 85 participants in this year’s battle. Jose Rodriguez, Drazec, AKA, etc.
One by one extremely dope performances.

You’ve entered a few DJ competitions, what drew you into the DMC Portablist Championships this year?

The fact that it’s DMC as it still is the most prestigious dj battle ever. Also I had never entered a portablist battle before.
I am, to be completely honest, not a very experienced portablist since I only have my portable turntable for a year. I was especially very lucky that I won the battle.

Do you think DMC should continue the Portablist Championships?

Hell yeah!!! “Period”
It was such a nice DJ battle. I really enjoyed watching all the videos. I can’t wait to meet up with the other DJ’s one day.

Where do you see the Portablist scene in the future?

Honestly, when the gear will become better, don’t get me wrong the gear we have now is already pretty damn good, I think this whole thing will completely blow up.
Every DJ, scratch and non-scratch, should have (will have) a portable turntable.
Travelling and having a portable turntable in your backpack is such an insanely dope thing.
I hope to see at every airport jam sessions in the future!
I already saw something like this even before I had a portable turntable myself. It’s so great! It gives us scratch DJ’s a forum to the “regular” people and show them how cool scratching actually is - haha!

What’s on the horizon for yourself as a DJ?

I’m gonna keep on scratching. When we can play shows again I’ll probably do more showcases again with my buddies from Herrmutt Lobby (those who invented the Playground app). I’m involved in other projects of which I cannot reveal anything about now, but big things will come!
